Kenya has made significant strides in the Global Competitiveness Report 2019, ranking 6th in Sub-Saharan Africa and 95th globally. According to the report, published on October 17, 2019, Kenya's business environment has shown remarkable performance.
While Kenya's ranking has dropped from last year's 93rd position, the country has performed well in business dynamism, ranking 51st globally. This is largely due to its reputation in handling stakeholder interest upon winding up a company, a key aspect of insolvency regulation.
However, Kenya still has a long way to go in terms of ease of doing business. The country ranks 114th in the cost of starting a business, with it taking an average of 23 days to start a business in Kenya, compared to half a day in New Zealand.
Kenya's worst performance was in health and ICT adoption, ranking 116th in both metrics. The report highlights the need for improvement in internet subscriptions, with only 0.2 people out of 100 having access to fibre internet solutions. Furthermore, only 0.7 out of 100 people use mobile-broadband subscriptions.
The country's life expectancy has also dropped to 57.6 years, a concerning trend. The Global Competitiveness index, a report by the World Economic Forum, ranks countries based on 12 pillars, including infrastructure, ICT adoption, and more.
