On October 17, 2019, a devastating ferry tragedy occurred in Likoni, Kenya, claiming the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu. The family is now seeking justice, with plans to sue Kenya Ferry Services.

According to the family's spokesperson, Luka Mbati, the decision to file a lawsuit was made after the release of post-mortem results, which concluded that Kighenda and her daughter died due to suffocation.

Chief Government pathologist Johansen Oduor conducted the autopsy at Jocham Hospital mortuary in Mombasa, which took one-and-half hours to complete.

As the family prepares to file a suit against KFS, the government has shown its support by donating Sh 200,000 towards the funeral arrangement.

Additionally, the family has received a cheque for Sh682,500 from Mayfair Insurance Company, which had covered the family's vehicle. The insurance claim was made on October 7.

Mr. Wambua, the husband of Mariam Kighenda, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the ferry services, stating that his wife was an experienced driver who would never make the mistake of reversing out of the ferry midstream.
