Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa was arrested on October 16, 2019, in connection with the violence that broke out at a ODM party meeting in Ganda Ward, Malindi, on October 15, 2019.

The violence, which left one person dead and several injured, was allegedly caused by Jumwa and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno after they stormed the party meeting.

A man identified as Gumbao Jola, 48, the uncle of the ODM aspirant in Ganda Ward by-election Katana, passed away upon arrival at Malindi General Hospital.

Jumwa and her bodyguard were taken to Port police station in Mombasa and later arraigned in court on October 16, 2019, at 2:30 pm.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alloys Kemo applied to have them detained for 21 more days to investigate murder charges, incitement to violence, breach of Election Offences Act, and breach of electoral code of conduct.

Kemo stated in a sworn affidavit that the police wanted to hold Jumwa and her bodyguard as they investigated the matter, citing a tense and volatile situation in Malindi.
