Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa was arrested on Tuesday night following a shooting incident at Ganda Ward in Malindi, where a man was shot dead after rival ODM party supporters clashed.
On Wednesday, Jumwa and her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno were arraigned at the Mombasa Law Courts, where the prosecution sought more time to detain them pending conclusion of investigations into the shooting incident.
However, Jumwa's lawyers opposed the application, arguing that she is one of the agents in the Ganda Ward by-election scheduled for Thursday, October 17.
As a result, the MP and her co-accused will spend Wednesday night in police custody at Kilindini Police Station, pending a ruling on their bail by Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet on Thursday morning.
Before the shooting occurred, Jumwa reportedly stormed an ODM agents meeting at Reuben Katana's home, where ODM officials were planning how to handle the by-election on October 17.
