On October 16, 2019, Kenya Power issued a public notice to unlicensed communication networks operating in the country, cautioning them against attaching their fiber optic cables to their distribution poles.
The notice, which was issued on Twitter, gave the encroachers 14 days to remove the installations, failure to which necessary action would be taken against them, including bringing down the illegal networks and/or instituting legal action.
According to Kenya Power, such activities constitute a breach of their wayleave trace and safety clearances, and have in some instances caused accidents along roads and in private homes, thus endangering public safety and life.
Kenya Power has signed lease agreements with several telecommunications operators, including Safaricom, Airtel, Liquid Telecom Ltd, Jamii Telecommunications, Indigo Telecommunication Ltd, and Wananchi Telecom Ltd.
The firm has been in the fiber optic business since 2010 and has been providing internet, television, communication, and other services to houses and businesses.
