On October 16, 2019, the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) emphasized the importance of adhering to safety rules and regulations for passengers and motorists aboard water vessels.
As part of their efforts to promote ferry safety, KFS issued guidelines for both passengers and drivers to follow.
Passenger Safety Guidelines ¶
- Passengers are advised not to sit or stand on the prow of the ferry, which is the most forward part that cuts through the water.
- Children should never be left unattended.
- Loads or weights should not be placed on pressurized pipes.
- Unauthorized areas should not be occupied.
- Passengers are also warned against sitting or leaning on the edges of the ferry.
Driver Safety Guidelines ¶
- Drivers are required to follow signs leading to the ferry and directions from staff.
- They should drive within the regulated speed limit and give themselves plenty of room for braking.
- Before driving onto or off a deck, drivers are advised to turn on their dipped headlights to help spot staff wearing safety reflectors and make vehicle deck markings more visible.
- While onboard the ferry, drivers should ensure their car engine is switched off, handbrake engaged, and windows rolled down.
- Finally, drivers should unbuckle their seat belts and disembark from the vehicle.
In the event of an emergency, KFS advises that the coxswain shall give direction on emergency procedures to be followed.
