On October 16, 2019, thousands of Airtel Kenya subscribers were left without access to calls and SMS services due to a mass network outage.
According to industry data, Airtel Kenya controls 33.3 percent of the voice market in the country, making the outage a significant issue for many Kenyans.
Airtel Kenya acknowledged the disruption on Twitter, stating that it was aware of the issue and working to restore the network.
The telco's official communication came after many subscribers took to social media to express their frustration at being unable to place direct calls and send messages since Tuesday night.
Although Airtel Kenya initially stated that only voice and message services were affected, some subscribers reported being unable to access data services as well.
However, the company later clarified that data services were available, albeit with intermittent calls and SMSs.
Airtel Kenya apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured subscribers that it was working to resolve the issue as a priority.
