On October 16, 2019, a devastating incident shook the community in Kericho town when a 7-year-old standard five pupil took his own life.
Peter Awour, an orphan living with his relatives, was found hanging in a house under construction in Nyagacho estate by a member of the public at around 7 pm.
According to Kericho County Deputy Police Commander Patricia Nasio, the body was discovered after Awour had left for school on Tuesday morning.
"It is not immediately clear what time the deceased committed suicide," Nasio said, adding that investigations have been launched into the death.
The police are awaiting postmortem results to determine whether the death was a suicide incident or if foul play was involved.
Statistics released by the police show that 13 people in Kericho committed suicide in July, but the numbers dropped to less than five in August and September.
