On October 16, 2019, Labour CS Ukur Yatani appointed Mary Wambui as the chair of the National Employment Authority (NEA), sparking controversy among lawmakers and the public.
Wambui's appointment was met with disappointment and criticism, with many questioning the government's commitment to youth inclusion. Some felt that Wambui was too old and out of touch with the harsh unemployment realities facing Kenyan youth.
However, Wambui defended her appointment, stating that she was better qualified and experienced than her critics. 'I got the post because I'm better than those complaining. I have the qualifications and experience to run the office,' she said.
The NEA is mandated to formulate and implement employment policies and programs for the creation of sustainable employment. Despite its mandate, the impact of the body has yet to be felt, with unemployment levels rising steadily each day.
