On October 16, 2019, Feng Zaichao, a Chinese national, was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for attempting to smuggle an ivory bangle into the country.
The ivory bangle, weighing 60 grams, was concealed in a cigarette packet and was discovered during a routine check.
According to reports, Feng Zaichao attempted to bribe Kenya Wildlife Service officials with 200 Yuan after his arrest, but the money was withheld as evidence.
Feng Zaichao was on transit from Bangui to China via JKIA, flying with Kenya Airways (KQ255) and Qatar Airways (Qatar airways 896).
Kenya has been cracking down on the ivory trade, with the government implementing strict anti-poaching laws and increasing security at national parks to protect the country's wildlife and tourism industry.
Kenya has also emerged as a major transit route for ivory destined for Asian markets from eastern and central Africa, with the illegal ivory trade being fueled by demand in Asia and the Middle East.
