On October 16, 2019, a major drug trafficking operation was foiled in Nanyuki, with police intercepting a lorry carrying 139 kilograms of weed worth Sh2.8 million.

The lorry, which was headed to Nairobi from Moyale in Marsabit County, was intercepted by officers from the Transnational Intelligence Unit based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.

Laikipia East police boss Kizito Mutoro revealed that the officers had been trailing the lorry from Moyale, where they were tipped off about the truck's contents.

‘We were tipped off about the truck from Moyale and we found that it had a false extension behind the driver’s cabin where the drugs were put in 62 wrapped polythene papers,’ said Mr Mutoro.

After a three-hour operation, the officers managed to cut open the extension on the lorry’s body, where the drugs were found hidden.

Three suspects were arrested and detained at Nanyuki Police Station before their arraignment.

‘This is a large syndicate of drug traffickers and we will seeking for more time from the court to pursue more suspects,’ said Mr Mutoro.
