On October 14, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the appointment of eight individuals to the State Corporations Advisory Committee through a special Kenya Gazette notice. Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani also announced his pick for the chairperson of the National Employment Authority (NEA), naming Mary Wambui.
However, Wambui's appointment sparked outrage and raised doubts about the government's commitment to youth inclusion. Many Kenyans, including political leaders, took to social media to express their discontent, claiming that Wambui is out of touch with the realities of young unemployed graduates in the country.
When contacted by the Nation, Wambui responded to the criticism, stating, “I got the post because I am better than those complaining. I have the qualifications and experience to run the office.”
