Published on October 15, 2019, the Senate has formed a special committee to investigate the impeachment of Governor Granton Samboja of Taita Taveta County.

The committee, comprising 12 Senators, was formed after the Senate received a report from the Taita Taveta County Assembly indicating that they had impeached the governor on various grounds, including gross office misconduct and failure to hold annual state of the county addresses.

The special committee is expected to invite various stakeholders to submit their allegations during the investigations.

Earlier, Governor Samboja had been impeached by the Taita Taveta County Assembly, with 30 out of 33 MCAs supporting the motion. The MCAs cited various reasons for kicking him out, including failure to submit an annual report on the implementation status of county policies and plans, misappropriation of funds, and misleading the people of Taita Taveta in dissolving the county.

However, Governor Samboja had received a temporary reprieve after the High Court in Nairobi suspended the county assembly's decision to remove him from office.
