On September 18, 2019, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology was forced to close its doors due to unrest. The aftermath of this event has seen 19 students suspended indefinitely, a decision they plan to challenge in court.
According to a memo dated October 4, 2019, and signed by acting registrar academic affairs Prof. Thomas Sakwa, the students have been suspended indefinitely. The memo was posted on the students' notice board.
The Students' Governing Council Chairman, Vincent Lumala, Secretary General, Gerald Maina, and Treasurer, Amon Kiptarus, are among those suspended.
Following the suspension, the university administration began recalling the students, starting with first years who were required to pay a fine of Sh. 950 for their role in the destruction of property during the strike. The students' colleagues are expected to report on October 14, 2019.
However, the varsity staff camped at the gate, allowing only students who had cleared their first semester fees and signed a commitment to adhere to the institution's rules and regulations to enter.
The strike was sparked by the university management's decision to lock out students who had not cleared fees from sitting end-of-semester examinations.
A student leader, who wished to remain anonymous, accused the varsity authorities of being unfair and sidelining the students' representatives in the decision-making process.
When approached for comment, the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Asenath Sigot, declined.
