Road Fatalities in Kenya: 2,735 Lives Lost in 2019

Between January 7 and October 7, 2019, a total of 2,735 people lost their lives in separate road accidents in Kenya, a 17.1% increase compared to the same period in 2018.

Published on October 16, 2019, the latest statistics by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that pedestrians were the most vulnerable road users, with at least 1,049 deaths recorded by October 7, 2019, compared to 902 in 2018.

Men accounted for 83.3% of the fatalities, while women accounted for 16.7%, with 2,263 and 469 deaths respectively.

According to the NTSA, road crashes claimed the lives of 554 passengers, 815 motorcyclists, 559 pillion passengers, 262 drivers, and 55 pedal cyclists.

Most of the accidents occurred in Nairobi, with young people aged between 24 and 34 years being the most affected.

Private cars accounted for 722 deaths, while commercial vehicles contributed 630 fatalities, and passenger service vehicles were associated with 415 cases.

The counties with the highest number of deaths were Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Machakos, and Murang'a, in that order.
