On Tuesday, Nanyuki police intercepted a lorry carrying 139 kilograms of bhang worth Sh2.8 million, arresting three suspects in the process.

The lorry, which was headed to Nairobi from Moyale in Marsabit County, was intercepted along the Nanyuki-Nyeri highway.

According to Laikipia East police boss Kizito Mutoro, the operation was coordinated by officers from the Transnational Intelligence Unit based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.

“We were tipped off about the truck from Moyale and we found that it had a false extension behind the driver’s cabin where the drugs were put in 62 wrapped polythene papers,” said Kizito.

It took the officers close to three hours to access the hidden extension, which was cut open using electric metal grinders.

The three suspects are being detained at Nanyuki Police Station and will be arraigned tomorrow.

Investigations may go beyond the border to establish the source of the drugs, as reports on drug trafficking originated from Moyale, which borders Ethiopia.
