On October 14, 2019, HMD Global announced the global rollout of Android 10, and just days later, the update began rolling out to Nokia 8.1 users in Kenya.

The update, which clocks in at just under 1.5 GB, brings a system-wide dark mode, smart replies, gesture navigation, additional controls for privacy and location, and the September 2019 security patch.

According to the official changelog, the update also includes features previously highlighted as coming to Android in Android 10.

As the first major upgrade for the Nokia 8.1, which started selling in Kenya at the end of March 2019, this update marks a significant milestone for the device.

HMD Global expects to further provide upgrades to Android 10 to at least two other smartphones, the Nokia 9 PureView and the Nokia 7.1, before the turn of the year.
