As a parent, there's nothing more frustrating than getting your child ready for school on time, only to realize that you've made a mistake with their uniform. This was the case for me recently, when I dressed my son in the wrong outfit for his Wednesday soccer, clubs, and swimming activities.
It's not just a matter of getting the day's outfit right, but also ensuring that the uniform is complete with all the necessary items, such as a towel, lotion, spare boxers, and a swimming costume. And let's not forget the cost of these branded and specific clothing items, which can be a significant burden for many families.
Looking back, my primary school uniform was a far cry from the complex and expensive outfits that children wear today. We had a simple maroon shorts and yellow or orange shirt, with no official colour for socks and shoes. Swimming lessons were a rare occurrence, and we often had to learn how to stay afloat in the nearby stream.
Fast forward to today, and the school uniform has become a multi-million shilling industry, with parents struggling to keep up with the latest trends and requirements. The problem is not just about remembering what to wear on which day, but also about the cost and accessibility of these branded and specific clothing items.
As a parent, it's hard not to wonder if modern education is pushing the school uniform to unwarranted limits. Is it really necessary to have a different outfit for every activity, and at what cost to the family budget?
