On October 15, 2019, a heated exchange erupted between women lawmakers from the Inua Mama and Embrace factions during an interview on Citizen TV’s Day Break show.
Representatives from the two factions, Rosa Buyu (Kisumu Women Rep), Alice Wahome (Kandara MP), and Gladys Boss Shollei (Uasin Gishu Woman Rep), engaged in a fierce debate over the Uhuru-Raila handshake and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
Shollei alleged that President Uhuru Kenyatta entered into the handshake to 'tame Raila Odinga' but it has now turned into a 'monster' due to the BBI. She further claimed that the BBI is an 'illegal process.'
Buyu, however, defended the handshake, stating that it has brought peace and allowed the economy to improve. She also clarified that the handshake is not an 'employing company' and is not supposed to put money in people's pockets.
Wahome, on the other hand, said that the handshake event did not translate into understanding by the Kenyans and that the opposition party should be checking the government, not going to bed with it.
