On October 15, 2019, police in Homa Bay made a significant breakthrough in a two-year-old case of stolen county containers. The containers, worth Ksh 700,000, had been stolen from the county's department of roads between May 5, 2017 and April 3, 2018.
The containers belonged to Ocean Freight Limited, a shipping company, and had been used to transport road maintenance equipment from Mombasa to Homa Bay county offices.
According to Homa Bay DCI commander Daniel Wachira, one container was recovered in Kochola East A village, Asao Location in Nyakach Sub County on Monday evening. Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect received the container directly from a county government officer.
The container was recovered after the suspect sold it to a client in Kismu Town, but the client returned it on Sunday evening after discovering it was stolen property. The suspect has since disappeared, and a manhunt has been launched.
Interestingly, the second container had been recovered 12 days ago in Muhoroni Town, Kisumu County, and one suspect had been arrested. In August, former county Chief Officer in the Department of Roads Chris Agong' and Roads Inspector John Paul Otieno were arrested in connection with the theft.
They were charged in court and released on Ksh.200,000 bail each and a bond of Ksh.500,000. The hearing is scheduled for October 22.
