On October 15, 2019, a tense situation unfolded at the Homa Bay County Assembly as ousted Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo returned to office, defying the majority of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and staff members.
Ms. Ayoo was impeached on November 1, 2018, by over 40 MCAs following an impeachment motion tabled by Ruma/Kaksingri Ward MCA Osuri Omoro over alleged gross misconduct.
However, Ayoo maintained that she is the legitimate Speaker of the County Assembly of Homa-Bay, citing a court-issued staying order until the case is determined.
She claimed that the current acting speaker, Evans Marieba, is illegally in office and therefore has no powers to transact any business of the Assembly.
Marieba, however, pleaded with Ayoo to maintain peace and avoid hiring goons to destroy Assembly property, dismissing claims that he was illegally in office.
