Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has announced that the assembly will reconvene for the current session on October 29, 2019, after being indefinitely adjourned last week.

The adjournment was a result of mediation efforts following a heated dispute between Elachi and Majority Leader Abdi Hassan Guyo, who had called for her removal.

Elachi's return to office was facilitated by a court ruling that reinstated her after her impeachment.

On Thursday, Elachi forcefully reasserted her authority by declaring the resumption date through a Special Notice published in the Kenya Gazette.

According to the notice, the assembly will resume its regular sittings on October 29, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. in the Assembly chambers.

The assembly's chambers had turned into a battleground on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, with fistfights and tear gas deployed for over three hours as rival MCAs clashed over Elachi's return.

Elachi's attempt to chair the session was thwarted when the clerk declined to provide the order of business, and the Hansard was not presented due to issues with the office of the clerk and the Assembly's ICT department.

Elachi was forced to adjourn the House indefinitely, stating that she would reconvene when peace had been restored in the assembly.
