Former Othaya MP Mary Wambui Munene has been appointed chairperson of the National Employment Authority, a move that has sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani made the appointment in a gazette notice issued on Monday, October 14, 2019, effective immediately for a period of three years.

Wambui, who served as Othaya MP from 2013 to 2017, was once rumoured to be former president Mwai Kibaki's wife.

However, her appointment has not been taken lightly by a section of Kenyans who feel that a youth should have been given the job, citing the high levels of unemployment among the youth.

The National Employment Authority was established in April 2016 by an act of Parliament, with the aim of providing a comprehensive institutional framework for employment management, enhancement of employment promotion interventions, and increasing access to employment by the youth, minorities, and marginalized groups.

Some Kenyans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the appointment, citing that the president is going against the spirit of creating jobs for the youth.
