Published on October 14, 2019, a former Kenyan inmate's shocking revelations have shed light on the dark reality of life in the country's prisons.
According to Daniel Mwangi, who was sentenced to death for robbery with violence in 2012 but later released, homosexuality is widespread in Kenyan prisons.
He claims that in the holding area, prisoners, known as 'Overall,' will bribe new inmates with amounts ranging from Sh300 to Sh500 to allocate them to their cells.
The 'newbie' is then forced to share a mattress, food, and cigarettes with their 'husband' and pay back at night.
Money, Mwangi says, is everything in prison, and those who have it can buy the best food, while others are left to feed on beans and ugali.
He estimates that almost half the population in Kenyan prisons are in homosexual relationships, with some men selling themselves to fellow prisoners for as little as two sticks of cigarettes or up to Sh500.
