Protests erupted outside the Nairobi County Headquarters on Monday as police used teargas to disperse a group of angry cleaning staff demanding their unpaid salaries.
The staff, clad in green aprons, had taken their demonstrations to the governor's office, where Governor Mike Sonko has been absent for almost a week.
According to Business Today, the protesting county workers have not been paid for four months, joining a growing list of county workers across the country who are demanding their salaries.
As of August 2019, 21 counties had yet to pay their workers, with seven counties - West Pokot, Kilifi, Kisumu, Samburu, Homa Bay, Kitui, and Laikipia - having not paid their workers at that time, according to the Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) General Secretary Roba Duba.
Meanwhile, Governor Sonko was spotted partying in Dubai on Sunday evening, where he was accompanied by prominent businessman Stanley Livondo.
At the Cavalli Club, Sonko was ushered into the VIP section, where he partied through the night, with the master of ceremony introducing him as 'Welcome Mike Mbui Sonko, governor of the great city of Nairobi.'
