Heavy rainfall in Mombasa has caused widespread flooding, with residents expressing fears of a water-borne disease outbreak.

The floods, which began on Saturday night, have affected several areas including Nyali, Kisauni, Kongowea, Kaa Chonjo, and parts of the Mombasa central business district.

Motorists have faced difficulties navigating through the flooded roads, with some areas such as Bamburi experiencing severe flooding.

According to Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo, there have been no casualties reported as a result of the heavy flooding.

However, he urged the county government to improve drainage systems to prevent flooding during heavy rains.

"I have seen that they have tried unclogging the sewages in various parts but they should improve so that we do not experience this [again] when rains fall," Mr Kitiyo said.

Albert Keno, Mombasa County Chief Officer for Transport and Infrastructure, attributed the flooding to the drainage system being overwhelmed.

"We will be expanding the drainage around Mkomani to ease the flow of water in that area," he said.

Kenya Red Cross Coast Regional Coordinator Hassan Musa urged residents living in lowlands to be on high alert and to clear storm waterways to prevent further flooding.
