October 14, 2019, marked a day of reckoning for the Nairobi County government as a damning audit report revealed a staggering Sh6 billion unaccounted for in the financial year ending June 2019.

Auditor General Edward Ouko's report highlighted a glaring lack of transparency, with the government failing to produce supporting documents for the expenditure of Sh6 billion.

Furthermore, the audit revealed that the county had withheld over Sh3.04 billion held in three different bank accounts, while Sh209 million was withdrawn from the county's bank account without authorization.

The report also exposed the county's questionable spending habits, including the purchase of assets worth Sh561 million without proper documentation and the payment of Sh652 million to AAR for staff insurance without adequate records.

Additionally, the county was unable to provide documentation for the Sh421 million used to award scholarships, and irregularly paid Sh381 million to suppliers and used Sh592 million in stalled projects.

The audit's findings were stark, with Auditor General Ouko issuing a 'Disclaimer of Opinion' due to the lack of transparency and accountability in the county's financial dealings.
