October 14, 2019, marked a significant day for Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o as she finally addressed the rumors surrounding her relationship with music star Janelle Monae.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Lupita was asked how she handles curiosity about her love life. In response, she shared her thoughts on the matter, stating, “I feel like there are parts of myself that I care to share and then there are parts that I don’t.”
Commenting on the numerous men she has been linked to, including co-star Michael B. Jordan and Jared Leto, Lupita expressed her concerns about the thin line between having her story told and being devoured by the media. She emphasized the importance of being conscious of the danger of perpetuating a struggle without triumph.
When asked about the photoshopped U.K. cover of the Italian magazine Grazia, Lupita explained her reasons for calling them out on Instagram. She stated, “Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women’s complexion, hairstyle and texture.”
Lupita also took the opportunity to praise her father, Professor Anyang Nyong'o, as her role model when it comes to fighting for what she believes in. She shared, “I was born into a political family. My father was fighting for what he believed in,” adding, “I think it was really just instilled in me that there are things in this world that are worth changing—part of living is about trying to transform the world into, you know…the world that we want to be a part of.”
