On October 13, 2019, chaos erupted at Nairobi City Hall after Members of County Assembly (MCAs) insisted that embattled Speaker Beatrice Elachi vacate the office, forcing her to lock herself in and clash with her supporters.

Earlier, Speaker Elachi had made a forceful comeback to the office, reclaiming her seat by sending a special message to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Amidst the turmoil, a letter circulated on social media claiming that Elias Otieno Okumu, the Nairobi County Minority Leader, was suspended following the chaos. The letter stated that Mr. Okumu was among the legislators who disobeyed Speaker Elachi and was relieved of his duties.

However, ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale rubbished the claims, saying the letter is fake and urged Kenyans to ignore it.

Part of the letter reads, 'By receipt of this letter, Hon. Elias Otieno Okumu is suspended as leader of the minority party pending investigations and determinations of this and other allegations.'
