On October 14, 2019, the Government released draft plans for the Sh28 billion Nairobi Railway City, a 425-acre project aimed at expanding Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD). The project, expected to be completed in 20 years in three phases, will see the transformation of the Railway City into a multi-modal hub.

The Railway City Masterplan will include a residential area, business hubs, and a main station area. The project's infrastructure will account for a significant chunk of the budget, with Sh17.5 billion allocated for railway infrastructure, followed by Sh3.9 billion for water supply and Sh2 billion for road construction and pavements.

According to Transport Principal Secretary Charles Hinga, the Nairobi Railway City will feature multi-modal transit stations, mixed-use buildings, international offices, and high-tech industry buildings. The project aims to ease congestion on Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue, and Landhies Road.

“The Nairobi Railway City will include multi-modal transit stations, mixed-use or commercial buildings, international offices, small and medium enterprise cluster and high tech industry buildings,” said Transport Principal Secretary Charles Hinga. “Such a diverse urban programme will generate a 24-hour dynamic city,” he added.

The public has 60 days to air their views on the draft plans before they are finalised.
