On November 4, 2015, a gang attacked a family at their home in Kefinko Estate, leaving a trail of destruction and trauma in their wake.
Among the victims was LSO, who was working on his laptop, and his wife, who was reading the Bible. Their house help was in the kitchen when the gang struck.
The gang, which included Hillary Otindo alias Elvis Mulaa, forced LSO to send Sh1,050 from his mobile money account to another subscriber, whose transaction details showed the name Elvis Mulaa.
High Court judge Ruth Sitati noted that the money transfer was a crucial piece of evidence that linked Otindo to the crime scene.
Otindo was convicted of robbing LSO of two mobile phones, a laptop, clothes, shoes, and Sh25,000 cash. He was also found guilty of raping LSO's wife, along with seven other accomplices who remain at large.
The gang was armed with machetes, knives, metallic rods, and clubs during the attack, which was reported at Kakamega Police Station.
Thanks to the mobile transaction, Otindo was eventually arrested and brought to justice.
