On Sunday, October 13, 2019, Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli spoke at Bukhwala Seventh Day Adventist Church in Khwisero Constituency, where he criticized Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

Atwoli challenged Dr. Ruto to tell Kenyans the source of his huge donations to churches, saying he lacked the credibility to serve as president.

He claimed that the Luhya community would never support Dr. Ruto's 2022 presidential bid, saying that some of their leaders had become cheap and were busy chasing handouts.

“If the deputy president thinks he can win the support of the Luhya community by frequenting western region to attend church functions and making donations, he is mistaken,” said Mr. Atwoli.

He also criticized the leadership of the Catholic Church for accepting donations from politicians without questioning the source of the money.

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale responded to Atwoli's remarks, saying that Dr. Ruto would not be defeated in the 2022 presidential race through verbal attacks.
