On Sunday, October 13, 2019, Kenyan athlete Brigid Kosgei made history by setting a new women's marathon world record in Chicago, clocking an impressive 2:14:04.
This achievement comes just a day after Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to run the marathon under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge at Prater Park in Vienna, completing the race in 1:59:40.
Kosgei's record-breaking time erased Britain's Paula Radcliffe's time of 2:15:25, set on April 13, 2003, in London.
The Kenyan athlete's achievement was met with congratulations from her countrymen, including Deputy President Dr. William Ruto, who tweeted, 'Hearty congratulations to Brigid Kosgei for setting a new women's world record of 2:14:04, and triumphantly defending your 2018 #ChicagoMarathon title.'
Other notable figures, including Sports CS Amina Mohammed and ODM leader Raila Odinga, also congratulated Kosgei on her historic achievement.
