On Saturday night, a devastating knockout in the 10th round of a junior middleweight match at the Windy City's Windy City Arena left boxer Patrick Day, 27, in a coma.

Day was knocked out with a right hook by his opponent, Charles Conwell, and fell backwards, his head bouncing off the mat. He was immediately rendered unconscious, despite his eyes remaining open, and was down for several minutes.

Medical attention was provided in the ring, and Day was given a neck brace and an oxygen mask before being carried out of the arena on a stretcher. Paramedics rushed him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remained unconscious and reportedly suffered a seizure.

According to ESPN, Day underwent emergency brain surgery and was put on a breathing tube and placed in the intensive care unit.

Conwell, 21, has expressed his concern for Day's well-being, tweeting that he is 'praying' for his recovery and encouraging his followers to do the same. 'I give my blessings and concerns to him and his team,' Conwell said in a statement to IFL TV after the match. 'I hope he is OK. I know he is a great person.'

Day's impressive boxing career includes being named the Daily News' Golden Gloves Champion in 2012, as well as the USA Boxing welterweight champion and US Olympic alternate. He is also the recipient of the Sugar Ray Robinson Outstanding Athlete Award.
