On October 12, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto joined the celebrations in Vienna, Austria, after Eliud Kipchoge made history by running a sub-2-hour marathon.

Sharing photos from the colorful after-party, Ruto expressed his admiration for Kipchoge's achievement, saying, 'We were all nervous and anxious, but you calmed down our nerves and broke the barrier of limitations. You are simply great.'

The after-party was attended by Kipchoge's wife, Grace Sugut, Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang, and the deputy president's wife, Rachael Ruto. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the owner of Ineos, catered for the entire event.

As the owner of Ineos, Ratcliffe sponsored the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, in which Kipchoge achieved the seemingly impossible feat of clocking a time of 1 hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds.

Deputy President Ruto had cancelled a weekend rally and missed the burial of former Senator Boni Khalwale's first wife, Adelaide, to travel to Vienna on Thursday night to watch Kipchoge in action.
