On October 13, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a message of condolence to the family of Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, who tragically lost their lives after their car plunged into the Indian Ocean from the Likoni ferry.

The President assured all Kenyans that efforts are being made to prevent a similar incident in the future.

According to State House, the President has indicated four measures that the government is taking to avert a similar incident in future, including the ongoing revamp of ferry services, the proposed Likoni Gate Bridge, the ongoing construction of the Dongo Kundu by-pass, and the completion of the Samburu-Kinango-Kwale Road.

President Kenyatta also thanked the multi-agency team that was involved in the recovery operation, citing their 'relentless efforts' in ensuring the long and tedious undertaking was a success.
