On October 13, 2019, a devastating incident occurred along the Kenya-Somalia border, where a police vehicle ran over a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Damajare Harehare road in Garissa.
According to Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai, the officers from Harehare GSU camp were on patrol when their vehicle hit the IED, resulting in the loss of some officers and severe damage to the vehicle.
Although the exact number of officers killed was not disclosed, reports suggested that 10 officers had lost their lives.
Police have launched investigations into the incident, and a joint patrol of Kenya Defence Forces, Administration Police, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, and regular police had been dispatched to the area to pursue the attackers.
