Published on October 13, 2019, The Standard reported that Interways Construction Works was on track to complete the construction of Witeithie and Mang'u footbridges over the Thika superhighway by the end of November.
According to Interways chief executive James Mugo, the projects were 70 per cent complete, with steel materials for erecting the bridges arriving a month ago from China. The materials were being assembled on site and would be bolted within two weeks before being placed on concrete pillars.
Interways attributed delays in clearing the steel parts at the Port of Mombasa to stringent new rules by the Kenya Revenue Authority. Mugo assured that the hoisting of the steel structures would not lead to the closure of the highway.
Interways had been paid Sh130 million for the two bridges against a contract sum of Sh430 million. The works included two-kilometre service roads, bus stops, public toilets, service lanes, sewer connections, and lighting.
The footbridges were expected to improve safety for pedestrians on the Thika superhighway, especially at Witeithie, where many accidents on the road had been reported.
