Published on October 13, 2019, the meetings industry in Kenya has evolved to become a vital component of the country's tourism sector. It not only offers substantial business opportunities but also provides numerous benefits to the broader economy.

The industry generates higher spending levels, reduces seasonality, contributes to destination regeneration, and spreads knowledge and innovation. To achieve sustainable development, a harmonious relationship must exist among the 'trinity' of sustainable business events: policy, enterprise, and innovation.

Policy plays a crucial role in shaping the industry's standards, including conference facilities, event management, environmental sustainability, and incentives. The government, as the custodian of laws and regulations, must develop policies in conjunction with relevant stakeholders.

The enterprise sector is influenced by demand and supply forces. The supply side encompasses accommodation, hospitality, and catering services, while the demand side includes conference organizers, delegates, exhibitors, and visitors. Enterprises encompass all stakeholders responsible for both supply and demand.

Research and innovation are critical to economic development, with a clear statistical link between innovation and improved living standards. The Internet of Things has disrupted the way business is done, and the supply side must keep pace with the increasingly sophisticated demands of the techno-savvy demand side.

Kenyan universities and their linkages are key sources of new knowledge creation, and the business events industry should encourage and support such initiatives. The recent establishment of a National Convention Bureau has laid the foundation for a successful future in business events tourism.
