Seedstars World Expands to Mauritius

On October 17, 2019, Seedstars World, a global startup competition, will hold its first-ever event in Mauritius, with the support of local partners Turbine and Africa Leadership University.

The event, which will take place at 4 p.m., is part of Seedstars World's mission to connect investors with the next generation of startup entrepreneurs in emerging markets.

According to Claudia Makadristo, Regional Manager for Africa at Seedstars, "At Seedstars, we believe talent and good ideas are everywhere. We see ourselves as a platform connecting investors to the next generation of startup entrepreneurs in places where normally people wouldn’t think startup ecosystem have such traction, growth and buzz."

Seedstars World is searching for startups that have raised less than $500,000 in funding, have a minimum viable product, and have existing traction. The winner of the competition will receive a chance to win an all-inclusive trip to Switzerland to compete at the Seedstars Summit for the title of Seedstars Global Winner and up to $500,000 in equity investments.

"Turbine truly believes in the Mauritian potential to create world-class start-ups," says Diane Maigrot, Startup and Business Growth Manager. "As such, we are happy to collaborate with Seedstars to uncover our champions."

The event is also supported by Africa Leadership University, which will host the Seedstars Bootcamp and prepare the island's standout entrepreneurs for the competition.

Additionally, Seedstars and ABAN have joined forces to train local business angels through Compass Venture Capital, and DOEN has partnered with Seedstars to launch the DOEN Land Restoration Prize to find and award the best tech-enabled solutions in the land restoration and land degradation space on the continent.

AFDB has also joined forces with Seedstars as a main partner for the "Job Creation Track," which aims to train, support, promote, and award startups that show potential for creating sustainable jobs in Africa.
