On October 12, 2019, 11 police officers patrolling the Kenya-Somalia border lost their lives after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Damajale Harehare road.

According to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, the officers were on patrol at around 1730hrs when the accident occurred.

“We lost some officers and the vehicle they were traveling on was damaged,” Mutyambai said, adding that reinforcement had been sent to the area to pursue the attackers.

Investigations into the incident were launched, and the police boss promised to provide further updates.

The attack comes days after anti-terrorism police thwarted a planned terror attack along the Kenyan coast, which was set to take place on October 20 during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa.
