On October 12, 2019, a devastating improvised explosive device (IED) attack occurred near the Kenya-Somalia border, claiming the lives of at least 10 General Service Unit (GSU) police officers.
According to Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, the officers were on a routine patrol along Damajale-Harehare Road in Garissa when their vehicle ran over a landmine at around 5:30 pm.
“Unfortunately, we lost some officers and the vehicle they were traveling in was severely damaged,” Mutyambai said in a statement.
Security forces were deployed to pursue the attackers, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
This attack comes just months after a similar incident in June 2019, where Somalia-based militia group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for an IED attack that killed 11 Kenyan police officers in Wajir County.
