Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka's involvement in the Mutonguni by-election has sparked protests from rival candidates, who claim he is 'stooping too low' to engage in a 'village fight'. The candidates, including Musee Mati of Maendeleo Chap Chap, Alex Nzau of Jubilee, and Mailu Mulonzya of Independent, have criticized Mr. Musyoka for his heavy involvement in the by-election.
Mr. Mati, whose successful election petition dragged in courts for almost two years, said a ward by-election was too small for the Wiper leader. He argued that Wiper already has the majority MCAs in Kitui County Assembly and should not be worried about losing the seat previously held by Narc Party.
Mr. Nzau said Mr. Musyoka needed the support of all candidates regardless of their party affiliations. He said that his involvement in ward campaigns will dent his national political ambitions.
The by-election was necessitated by the nullification of the election of Mr. Felix Mbevo of Narc by the Court of Appeal. The Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu-led party declined to nominate any candidate, saying she would work with whoever wins the seat.
Mr. Mbevo had obtained an injunction, triggering a series of suits and appeals, after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials tried to recall the election certificate a day after poll results were announced.
