On October 12, 2019, Ecuador's government was dealt a surprise when an umbrella grouping called CONAIE agreed to meet with President Moreno to discuss the cancellation or modification of economic reforms.

The decision came after a week of intense protests in the capital Quito, which were sparked by the elimination of fuel subsidies as part of a deal with the International Monetary Fund for a $4.2 billion loan.

Instantly, fuel prices more than doubled, prompting widespread outrage and demonstrations.

CONAIE, which had initially rejected the idea of negotiating, said it made the decision after consulting with its members.

Indigenous protesters, led by women, took to the streets again on Saturday, marking a significant shift in the movement.
