Eliud Kipchoge, a 34-year-old Kenyan athlete, made history on October 12, 2019, by completing 42 kilometers in under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria.
However, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has not recognized this achievement due to several reasons.
According to the IAAF, for an event to be considered a legitimate world record, it must meet certain criteria, including:
- Being sanctioned by the IAAF or the national athletics federation of the country hosting the event.
- Having officials present to monitor the event and ensure compliance with rules.
- Providing a safe and controlled environment for the athletes.
- Ensuring that the athletes are not assisted or aided in any way during the event.
- Having a minimum of three officials present to verify the results.
- Not allowing the athlete to be accompanied by a vehicle during the event.
- Being approved and sanctioned by a designated athletics official.
It has been reported that Kipchoge was provided with energy drinks and caffeine every five kilometers, which is against the IAAF rules.
Additionally, the event was not sanctioned by the IAAF, and the pacers were entering and exiting the course while Kipchoge was running.
As a result, the IAAF has not recognized Kipchoge's achievement as a legitimate world record.
