Vienna Celebrates Eliud Kipchoge's Historic Achievement ¶
On October 12, 2019, Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge made history by becoming the first person to run a marathon under two hours in Vienna, Austria.
As he approached the finish line, Kipchoge began to thump his chest, a gesture that has become synonymous with his 'No Human Is Limited' mantra. When he crossed the finish line in 1:59:40, he lifted his hand in the air, celebrating his achievement.
His wife, Grace, was waiting at the finish line, and Kipchoge's face lit up when he spotted her. He ran towards her, hugged her, and danced, celebrating his historic achievement with the world watching.
Back in Kenya, Kipchoge's mother, Janet Rotich, and extended family watched the marathon live, beaming with pride as their son made history. The crowd in Eldoret, Kenya, also broke into dance and song when Kipchoge crossed the finish line.
Social media was abuzz with congratulations from fans across the world, including Rio Ferdinand, who tweeted, 'We like to think we know a fair bit about speed, but today our jaws are pretty much on the floor… Congratulations @EliudKipchoge on an all-time great achievement! #Eliud159 #INEOS159.'
