On October 12, 2019, Kenyans on social media were excited by a promise from businessman Jimi Wanjigi to gift Eliud Kipchoge an airplane if he broke the two-hour marathon barrier.
The promise was made through a Twitter account @JimmyWanjigi1, which had earlier claimed that Kipchoge would receive the airplane if he became the first human to run a marathon under two hours.
However, it later emerged that the account was fake, and Kipchoge did not receive the airplane as promised.
Wanjigi later told Citizen.co.ke that the account was fake and did not represent him in any way, saying, "That's a fake account, it has nothing to do with me but we are proud of Eliud Kipchoge for what he has done for humanity and Kenya."
Despite the account being fake, it had already claimed to have fulfilled its promise to Kipchoge after he broke the two-hour barrier during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria on October 12, 2019.
Kipchoge completed the marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 40 seconds, making him the first human to run a marathon under two hours.
