On October 12, 2019, the South Rift region was abuzz with excitement as Eliud Kipchoge made history by becoming the first person to run a marathon under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
Residents from various parts of the region gathered at different venues to watch the historic moment live on big screens. In Kericho, Governor Professor Paul Chepkwony joined hundreds of fans at the Kericho Green Stadium, while in Bomet, Governor Hillary Barchok was at Mulot Secondary School.
Dr. Barchok hailed Kipchoge's achievement, saying, "This is a historic moment for the country with Kipchoge having demonstrated without doubt that with discipline, planning, dedication, a clear target – everything is achievable."
Professor Chepkwony, who is also the Council of Governors Sports and Youth Affairs committee chairman, added, "Kipchoge united Kenyans from different ethnic backgrounds, political persuasions and the world at large. He has shown all of us that it is possible to end tribalism."
The governors expressed confidence that Kipchoge's record would inspire youths in the country to work hard and improve their living standards.
