On October 12, 2019, the town of Eldoret erupted in joy as Eliud Kipchoge made history by becoming the first person to run a marathon under two hours during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria.

Thousands of people gathered in Eldoret town to watch the historic moment unfold, with many more following the event on live screens set up by the Uasin-Gishu County government.

As Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 1:59:40, the crowd went wild, with many screaming his name and cheering his achievement.

Among those who gathered to watch the event were local residents, students, and business owners, who all came together to celebrate Kipchoge's historic achievement.

"He has made history and indeed he is the greatest marathoner of all times," said Nicholas Kirui, a fan who was among the crowd.

At Kipchoge's home in Kapsisiywa village, Nandi County, his mother Janet Rotich and local residents gathered for a night vigil ahead of the big challenge, praying and preparing to cheer him on.

"I'm so excited with his achievement because he has been preparing for a while and today he has done it," said Janet Rotich, beaming with pride.
