Published on October 12, 2019, a day after Eiud Kipchoge's historic win in Vienna, Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga's convoy came under attack in Kibra, where he had gone to campaign.

Mariga's car was pelted with stones, and in one instance, tyres were set ablaze in the middle of the road, a few metres from a towering billboard with the candidate's face.

The incident occurred just days after ODM petitioned the electoral commission to open an internal probe into vote-rigging claims, escalating the stakes in the Kibra by-election.

Activist Boniface Mwangi had previously ridiculed President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto for endorsing Mariga, calling it a 'disrespectful' move.

Speaking on the Pointblank show, Mwangi said, 'Uhuru Kenyatta na Ruto Wametubeba ujinga sana. They decided to get us an ageing footballer who lied about his age, never voted before, was promoting betting and gambling to come and lie to the people of Kibra.'

President Uhuru had endorsed Mariga a few weeks ago, sparking a firestorm on social media platforms.

Some Kenyans have disparaged Mariga's candidature in Kibra, saying it reverses the gains made through the handshake.

Meanwhile, a number of Jubilee politicians have thrown their weight behind the candidature of ODM's candidate Imran Okoth.
